The Amateur's Guide to Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley
In this video, I return to the world of Moominvalley to analyze the hotly anticipated game Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley and its relationship with the original Moomin stories, Tove Jansson, and the philosophies it connects with.

I find it so astonishing that these stories are only now discovered in America seeing as the Moomins have played such a prominent role in European children’s media.
The outro to this video really made it. I loved this video, and as a new Moomin fan myself I this is a great introduction to/summery of Tove Jansson and the Moomin franchise as a whole.
You are a great storyteller, but the bg audio is mixed, so that I can not hear your words in front of it. That makes it unnessecerily difficult to follow. Maybe something to keep in mind for next time?

Great video! A central point of the Infinity Train is that it isn't about setting a universal moral system, or even helping people become their best self, it is about (in one-one's words) "solving problems". First, it's ideological rather than action or consequence based. Numbers are shown changing as people talk or think about things, even before they've acted on any decision, or set off any side effects. Second, it's specific. A person can reach zero about the problem that brought them to the train, but still not be morally ideal, and still have other problems (as seen with Jesse).
The character in Little Witch Academia, Lotte Jansson, is named after Moomin creator Tove Jansson. And Hannah England and Barbara Parker were based on Bill Hanna and you Joe Barbera.
love ur guide and all but im ngl, im kinda mad you like everything that i like
How did you make this video essay have the vibe of watching moomin
It’s beautiful.
disliked and closing the video as soon as I heard 'racist pseudoscientist' .
Absolutely love that show. Have the dvd. Lee Pace is a phenomenal actor. Gorgeous man.Miss Ned.
A lot of people say that Centaurworld's issue is it's too lighthearted and kid-friendly at times, and dark at others. And they're wrong. It's an odd choice to jump between bright and happy, and then... *The Elk.* But it wasn't what was wrong. Honestly, what was wrong with Centaurworld for me was that some moments were just... Slow? And a bit boring? And a lot of the jokes just didn't land? The story was amazing, and the characters were cute, but character personalities changed that often that I really couldn't get too invested. In episode one, Wammawink was the smart and safe one. Lighthearted, but deadly serious where safety was concerned. But later on she became as goofy and unserious about everything as anyone else. And they made her just neglectful and spiteful to Glendale all of a sudden? Stabby's personality suddenly changed completely when his body changed. And Rider. Caring, trusting Rider, who cares so much about her horse. Basically laughed in her horse's face when the horse said "Hey, trust *me*, not the man you met last week." And then outright insulted Horse, and marched with the guy Horse said not to trust with no suspicion. Season One was so... Episodic? Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, as it introduced many characters, and we had a few character development moments. But then it bombared us with four songs per episode, and maybe about one song every two episodes actually landed. Then there was season two, which if I'm honest, was just bad for the most part imo? Like- We got development and backstory episodes for Glendale, Derpleton, Ched, Zulius, and Stabby. But then each of those characters remained as a one-note joke characters. Oh, and the Backstory Magic was so obviously a deus ex machina that the show pulled out of nowhere, just with intent to use it to give us Nowhere King backstory. And *DO NOT* get me started on the Twitter birds. I get that they were a dig at the toxic, annoying fans a lot of media gets, but... Why didn't it have any representation of the supportive and genuine fans? It just made it sound like that's what the show sees all it's fans as, which kinda sucked. And remember, they weren't basing those birds' season 1 finale criticism off of actual criticism fans gave. Season 2 was written before Season 1 ended. And then, there's the issue of time. This is mu biggest issue. I liked a lot of the gags and bits the show had. I liked the character moments even if they felt irrelevant. But I spent a lot of the series, especially the second season, going "...does the show really have time for this??" They got in the Nowhere King's mind and spent a year and a half on a fart joke before even introducing the Elk. They had a whole song about throwing the enemies in a hole and burying them alive because it was more morally okay than killing them. All of Season 2's episodes were based around them building an army that never got used on Centaurworld's side, and rallying the humans on the Human world side to come join the fight in Centaurworld, which they didn't do. Even the s2e7 hootenanny ended up only relevant because it brought The Woman over. Season 2 had 8 episodes, and maybe three advanced the plot. Centaurworld feels like they had a world, and an antagonist, and nothing else worked out, Then they made the show as is.
I literally spend $20 worth of gift cards to get this game and its WORTH IT
12:02 My favorite character from the Movie Moomin and the comet referring to the Philosopher that lives under the bridge (keeps saying "not that it really matter anyways" and "nothing really matters") MoominMom asks does he want to come in for some tea and cookies? And he answers " cookies? at the time like this? Maybe just one."
Could you talk about Lars Jansson and his contributions please?
I grew up with the moomins anime back in the 90s and it always kinda felt a bit secretive, you know? No-one talked about it. There was no merch, no references. Just this quite little show that only I knew about. So seeing this obscure little franchise suddenly burst into popularity all over the internet is honestly pretty delightful. Along with finding out that everyone shared my opinions on Snufkin.
Despite not being as globaly popular, it is one of the spritually-nostalgic franshise to ever exist. Even now I still remember the beauty of moomin ever since my early 2nd years of age. We have Tove Jansson to thank for the gift she has offered.❤❤❤ Cheers from Sweden.🇸🇪

i think you're just missing the fundamental purpose of the show. it was never meant to be a life-changing critique of the current system or of police in general, its literally just a sitcom. so many of the examples you used are one-off jokes or cold opens, which you acknowledged in the video. i can see how those moments being played for laughs could upset some people, but when the primary focus is comedy, the writers shouldn't really have to worry about that kind of thing. being a cop show, it's extremely important that the show tries to address the issues brought up in this video, especially around the time that it was airing. but i think those more serious episodes may have misled some people into thinking that the show was trying to be more than it was, if that makes sense. with the controversy of police in general, i think the show would have still received hate if it didn't address these issues, and clearly the writers thought that they were important enough to make episodes about. but that doesn't mean that the core concept of the show ever changed. brooklyn 99 has always been about exploring the characters in the main cast, and showing the bonds that they've built throughout the entire show, while being hilarious at the same time. some of the episodes that fans loved most are more emotional character moments, or episodes that encompass the whole theme of a found family. so a lot of people might really disagree, but i think its a little bit unfair to expect more from the show. despite technically being a cop show, all this show really ever was is a sitcom. the job of a sitcom is to entertain people, and to make them laugh. i think this show did very well with that, even going beyond that and building these great characters that the audience can really relate to and love. i think that's what the creator of this show was trying to accomplish. the whole idea of a serious, inspirational cop show that points out flaws in the system and changes people's views would probably be an amazing show that moves a lot of people. but you just have to acknowledge that that show is not brooklyn 99. brooklyn 99 is something completely different, so i think its unfair to criticize this show so much for just fundamentally not being what you think it is, or want it to be.
I’m from Mexico, and I love Moominvalley and i really happy that the serie is being translate to spanish :)
Wow, this was such an enjoyable watch! I only recently started watching the 90s animated adaptation of the Moomin stories, and the way you put everything into context makes me appreciate the characters and themes so much more. I also liked the added perspective of why Moomin resonates with younger audiences today. Thank you for making this!

Fenomenalny film. Szkoda że nie ma tu jakiś europejskich adaptacji telewizyjnych ale szczerze wątpię by ktoś w ogóle przetłumaczył niemiecki cykl Sechs auf einen Streich na angielski. Od 2008 roku niemiecka telewizja publiczna kręci 1-godzinne adaptacje baśni braci Grimm i obecnie mamy ok. 50 odcinków, gdzie każdy to ekranizacja innej baśni.
I think the part about people liking snufkin bc he’s an angsty tall white guy is funny, because he is very much 4 feet tall
If anything, Bill Cipher has shown that physical reality doesn’t preclude becoming a tall angsty white guy for some folks
lovely essay!
I’m an American with Finnish heritage and was not familiar with the Moomins until my first visit to Helsinki in my thirties. I was baffled by all of these strange characters on mugs and gift items in the airport shops. It was like they had taken over, almost the way the Simpsons did in America for many years). I still haven’t explored much of the Moomin world (or this video) but I am looking forward to it. I have read a few of Tove Jannson’s novels.
I have Finnish heritage that I was unfortunately isolated from once my grandparents died. I never got to meet my Finnish grandmother and only fragments of the culture were mixed in with my other immigrant cultural upbringing. I was searching for Finnish culture and came across Moomin. As a queer mixed WOC, this series was a great awakening. It was like finding my lost family. I saw how my own family mirrored Tove's and how much I related to her as an artist myself. Your video essay has been unmatched to others and there is so much love put into it, thank you so much.
I became a fan of the Moomins as a small small child through the 90’s version, which was broadcasted in one single Mexican public children’s tv channel!!! I regained my love for them when entering my 20’s and now they are a huge part of my life, thanks so much for this video!! Even as someone who has been loving and learning from the Moomins for years, it clarified many questions I didn’t even knew I had, particularly because I’m not from a European country so some context escaped me 🩵🫧
Good job on video editing and presentation. I know it took a while to learn these skills but it's amazing, your artistic presentation to a serious topic while also not overbearing your audience with complex topic. SALUTE TO YOU!
Fascism is a justification for the right to domination, colonized and plunder, enacted by one people over all other, bases on a complicate myths of chosen peoples. But in economic practices, it is classic anti-worker, pro-Business class Union buster. By 1940, German worker wages had been reduce by 40%, in Italy it's was 60%, all worker Union were shut down, worker strikes got brutally suppress by para-military forces and the state polices, and the state themselves have became a legal private property for the nations elite. Fascism in Economic is the merges of state powers with that of the capital accumulated, where State power is a private property in of itself, share between the nations wealthiest Elite, and uses its against the rest of us, worker and small "business" owners.
(10:15) You do realize fascism had a similar "reject tradition" mentality that you say defined all those previous other movements, right? In kindest way I can say, claiming that capitalism fell alongside fascism is fifty different layers of retarded. It would make more sense if you said "the fall of fascism and communism" because communism is often seen as the "twin horror" and it to also fell. Capitalism didn't fall and never will. In the late-20th century, formerly socialist countries adopted the practices of market economies after realizing just how badly their countries were failing. Pro-capitalist and anti-socialist sentiments were only emboldened by the collapse of the USSR. (10:11) Despite the pictures you show, the "fall of imperialism" was a lot less violent. You really don't get many empires throughout history that dismantle themselves willingly. Slavery really also only fell in Western countries/empires during the 19th century, mainly because of the actions of non-slaves. Other countries like Haiti had supposedly "banned" slavery but it still was basically there. It was countries like Britain, France, and later the US that actually made the effort to get rid of slavery through the lands they occupied. Countries in Asia and Africa still practiced it until much later or until being conquered by Western countries. (10:18) What's wrong with "traditional" beauty? It's fact the human brain is wired to be attracted to certain features. Female beauty standards have sort of shifted throughout the generations while male beaty standards have literally been the same since ancient Greece. Nobody should try to demoralize other for how they look but it's not like society doesn't recognize that. Stories teaching against being a douche to others for how they have been around for centuries. The same thing goes for all of those other things you mentioned. (12:28) Okay, how do you know that it's not the people who advocate these "causes" who have an ignorant worldview? Where do you they get it from? People rarely get their ideas from thin air. People who advocate certain causes because somebody told them stuff that supports said cause. Hey, if an oppressor group really wanted to keep down the oppressed, they could do this type of 4D mental manipulation where they gaslight the oppressed into thinking they're actually the privileged ones.
Dude, that quote about the invisible child made me friggin cry. How beautiful ❤

This is such a great documentary! Fantastic work; thank you for your scholarly efforts. So interesting. I might be watching this “again”-nostalgia is a real thing.
I'm 2 minutes in, and I have learned nothing. You getting AI help with your writing? Pare it down. Tighten it up.
I don’t know what you expected from an hour and a half long vid. If you wanted someone to completely summarize their point within two minutes, watch a tik tok or something.
@@HenryKathman I prefer longform video, but I was watching a short by olafurw, and Moomin was essentially the punchline. I have never heard of Moomin, so I went looking. RUclips served up your video. And a lot of words came at me in those two minutes, but nothing about what Moomin is. So, while my tone was unnecessarily grouchy, I stand by my complaint/advice. The fact that it is a 90-minute video makes me wonder if it can be edited to 85, or 80 or 70 minutes. I do regret the tone of my original message. I was genuinely frustrated. This is the funny video that started the conversation: ruclips.net/user/shortsYQaJfrXQrSA Not sure that such links are allowed in comments.
